The Lagos State Government has intensified efforts to tackle the recurring problem of building collapses by engaging bricklayers, block moulders, and other construction artisans in Badagry and Ojo on the importance of adhering to building regulations and materials testing standards.

At a stakeholders’ forum held in Ojo, the Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory emphasised the need for strict compliance with safety standards to prevent structural failures that have claimed lives and destroyed property across the state.

Speaking at the event, the agency’s General Manager, Olayinka Abdul—represented by Divisional Director Lola Olowu—highlighted the devastating consequences of substandard construction practices.

She stressed that building collapses not only lead to tragic loss of life but also have long-term economic and psychological effects on affected communities.

“The rapid urbanisation of Lagos comes with the responsibility to ensure that all buildings are constructed and maintained according to the highest safety standards,” Abdul stated.

Recent incidents of building collapses in Lagos, particularly in high-density areas, have raised concerns about poor construction practices, substandard materials, and lack of regulatory compliance.

The state government, through agencies like LSMTL, has been working to curb these disasters by enforcing building codes and engaging stakeholders on best practices.

Abdul urged all artisans and developers to comply with existing safety regulations, warning that failure to do so could lead to severe consequences.

She noted that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration remains committed to regular training and engagement to ensure safer construction practices.

“With the cooperation of all stakeholders, we can drastically reduce building failures in Lagos and ensure that our city remains a safe and thriving metropolis,” she added.
