Ride-hailing drivers in Lagos State have commenced an indefinite strike over concerns about low fares, high commissions, operational deductions and poor working conditions.

According to The PUNCH, the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria announced that the industrial action would begin on Monday, October 12.

The union, an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress, said the strike would continue. It will last until the grievances of its members received satisfactory attention.

AUATON explained that drivers had repeatedly raised concerns about earnings, safety, security and policies imposed by app-based transportation companies.

“Despite repeated efforts by drivers and stakeholders to draw attention to these concerns, many of the issues remain unresolved,” the union said.

The union appealed to fleet owners and managers to suspend daily remittance demands during the strike.

It argued that drivers who comply with the directive would be unable to generate their regular income.

AUATON also urged fleet partners not to penalise drivers for participating in the industrial action.

The union disclosed that its task force would monitor compliance across local government areas in Lagos State.

It warned that members who disregard the directive could face disciplinary measures under its internal regulations.

The strike notice was signed by the Lagos State Chairman of AUATON, Jaiyesimi Olalabi Azeez, popularly known as Makavelli.

He maintained that the action was intended to secure sustainable earnings and better treatment for drivers. However, it was not meant to disrupt businesses unnecessarily.

The union called for constructive dialogue with ride-hailing operators and fleet owners to resolve the dispute.
