The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Shamsideen Oladiti, a prominent leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers on Lagos Island, in connection with accusations of assault and murder.
According to the police, Oladiti, 55, is currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Panti-Yaba, where investigations are ongoing.
The incident in question occurred on September 17, 2025, around 3:00 p.m., when Oladiti allegedly assaulted a dispatch rider on Lagos Island.
The suspect reportedly used a helmet and his fists to severely injure the victim, who was subsequently rushed to the hospital.
The victim is currently on oxygen and undergoing medical treatment.
In addition to the September attack, the police revealed that Oladiti was also implicated in an earlier assault on August 28, 2025.
During that incident, he allegedly used a metallic ring to strike a man repeatedly on the head and face. Despite receiving medical attention, the victim succumbed to his injuries on September 17. His body has been transferred to the mortuary for an autopsy.
The death of the second victim sparked protests at Oladiti’s office in Sandgrouse Market, where mourners set fire to two of his motorcycles, creating tension in the area.
In response, Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh led a team of mobile policemen, tactical squads, and conventional officers to the scene to restore order.
He reassured residents that Oladiti would face prosecution once the investigation was concluded.
“The suspect is in custody and will be charged to court as soon as investigations are completed. We urge Lagos residents to remain calm and law-abiding, as the command is committed to ensuring justice,” CP Jimoh stated.
Meanwhile, police spokesperson SP Abimbola Adebisi clarified that the dispatch rider injured on September 17 is still alive, contrary to some media reports.
“We have confirmed from the family that he is still alive. He is not dead, although he is currently breathing with the aid of oxygen. The one who died passed on September 17. He was also beaten by Oladiti on August 28 but died on Wednesday, September 17,” Adebisi explained.
