The Lagos State Police Command has apprehended a 46-year-old man, Jude Onouha, who is believed to be the leader of a notorious gang accused of impersonating security personnel to gain access to residential estates and steal valuable car parts.
According to a statement released by the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, the suspect was found with a Mercedes-Benz car jack modified to resemble a firearm.
This device was allegedly used to deceive estate security guards into granting the gang entry under the guise of conducting official investigations.
“The suspect and his gang specialized in disguising themselves as security operatives, wearing fake uniforms and using a modified Mercedes-Benz car jack, crafted to resemble a firearm, to deceive unsuspecting estate security personnel,” the statement noted.
Once inside the estates, the gang is said to have targeted luxury vehicles including Toyota Hilux, Toyota Highlander, Lexus 650, Mercedes-Benz models, and other SUVs.
They reportedly vandalised these cars and stole high-value components such as brainboxes, tapping glasses, wiring systems, side mirrors, and control devices.
Police confirmed that the arrested suspect has admitted to the crime and is currently cooperating with detectives in their ongoing investigation. Recovered from him were the modified car jack and a face cap labeled “Special Force,” which he allegedly used as part of his disguise.
“Efforts are ongoing to apprehend other members of the gang and their accomplices. The Command hereby wishes to advise residents, particularly estate management and security guards, to exercise vigilance and utmost caution whenever person(s) represent themselves as operatives of any security agency and seek to gain entrance into their estates,” the statement added.
Residents have been urged to carry out basic verification and consult their area’s Divisional Police Officer (DPO) when approached by individuals claiming to be law enforcement officers. This, the police say, is essential in preventing similar incidents.
Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has encouraged estate management and residents to remain alert and collaborate with local DPOs. He also provided emergency contact numbers—08063299264, 09053872208, and 08087332678—for swift police response in emergencies.
He reassured the public that, with vigilance, cooperation, and prompt reporting, the safety and security of Lagos communities will be significantly enhanced.
