The Lagos State Police Command has arrested 80 suspects and reported the deaths of two suspected armed robbers during operations targeting criminal activities across the state.
According to The Guardian, Commissioner of Police Tijani Fatai disclosed the arrests while briefing journalists at the command headquarters in Ikeja.
The operations targeted suspected armed robbery, vandalism, traffic robbery and other offences.
Two killed in Ijora gun battle
Fatai said the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit traced a suspected robbery gang to a hideout along Gasikia Road in Ijora-Badia on October 4.
According to police, the suspects opened fire when officers approached the location.
A gun battle followed, leaving two suspects dead, while another escaped.
Police arrested a 26-year-old suspect identified as Patrick Azure.
Weapons, vehicles recovered
The command said officers recovered six vehicles, four Beretta pistols, eight locally made pistols, mobile phones and other items.
Police also recovered suspected illicit drugs, cutlasses, axes and vandalised electrical materials.
Nine suspects were arrested over alleged vandalism along the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road.
Another 29 were arrested over suspected traffic robberies along the Lekki-Epe axis.
Police investigate suspects
Fatai said investigations were ongoing to determine the roles of those arrested.
He urged residents to continue providing credible information to security agencies.
“The command will continue to pursue criminal elements, dismantle organised criminal networks and protect critical public infrastructure across the state,” he said.
