Starting Monday, July 28, residents across Lagos and some parts of Ogun State will be without electricity for nine hours every day.

This planned outage will continue for 25 days, according to the Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors.

Power will go off daily from 8 am to 5 pm until August 21. The affected areas include the entire Lagos State and parts of Ogun like Sagamu, Ogijo, and Abeokuta.

Speaking on TVC, the Chief Executive Officer of ANED, Sunday Oduntan, confirmed the development. He said, “This is not a nationwide issue. The power outage is a result of scheduled maintenance by the Transmission Company of Nigeria, and it will affect all of Lagos and some towns in Ogun State.”

The Transmission Company of Nigeria also explained the reason behind the power cut. In a statement, it said the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and the Nigeria Independent System Operator approved the maintenance to upgrade one of its major transmission lines.

“The upgrade involves the installation of Optical Ground Wire fibre cable on the Omotosho/Ikeja West 330kV transmission line,” TCN stated.

The maintenance will take place daily from 8 am to 5 pm, during which the line will be shut down for safety reasons. Power will be restored after each day’s work, while other transmission lines will stay active to support supply around Lagos.

TCN added, “Upon completion, the upgrade will enable full operationalisation of the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system, enhancing real-time monitoring and management of the power grid.”

Oduntan noted that the daily shutdown was necessary to protect workers and equipment. He said, “The system will be shut down during work hours for safety reasons. But we expect everything to return to normal once the job is done.”

Both Ikeja Electric and Eko Disco have sent notices to customers in preparation for the outage. In a notice issued by Ikeja Electric, the company said, “Customers may experience intermittent power supply and load shedding across our network due to the planned TCN outage. We sincerely regret any inconvenience this may cause.”

Eko Disco also informed its customers, saying, “The planned outage is to enable works to be safely carried out on the Omotosho – Ikeja West 330kV power line. This will affect the entire network coverage areas under EKEDC.”

Despite the expected discomfort, Oduntan assured residents that everything would return to normal as soon as the upgrade is completed.
