The Lagos State Chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers has unveiled 3,000 Compressed Natural Gas tricycles, valued at N10.2 billion, to help ease transportation challenges in the state.

The initiative, launched on Wednesday by Alhaji Azeez Abiola, the Zonal Chairman of the Tricycle Owners and Operators Association of Nigeria under the NURTW, aims to reduce transport costs for Lagos residents.

During the launch, Abiola highlighted the benefits of the new CNG tricycles, stating that the move would help lower the high cost of transportation and provide relief to many residents. “We thank God Almighty for the opportunity to launch this laudable project with the support of President Bola Tinubu,” he said.

He explained that the new tricycles would bring significant savings for operators. “It costs a tricyclist N15,000 to fuel their vehicle daily, but with CNG, the cost will drop to between N2,500 and N3,000 for daily operations,” Abiola added.

He also mentioned that the initiative will create over 5,000 new jobs for operators and technicians involved in CNG conversions. “This development will reduce the cost of living among our people drastically,” he said, emphasizing the project’s positive economic impact.

Abiola appealed to the government to establish more CNG filling stations in areas where the tricycles will operate, noting that the only CNG station available is in Ikeja. “We need more stations in Alagbado, Ifako-Ijaiye, and Alimosho to make refilling easier,” he urged.

The NURTW thanked the Lagos State government and urged further support to ensure the smooth operation of the new CNG tricycles.
