The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority has revealed that Lagos needs approximately 15,000 public buses to effectively transport passengers across the state.
LAMATA’s Managing Director, Abimbola Akinajo, made this known on Wednesday while receiving a delegation from the Public Complaints Commission at the agency’s headquarters in Alausa, Ikeja.
According to a statement on LAMATA’s official X handle, the PCC delegation, led by Commissioner Hafeez Odunewu and accompanied by Director of Investigations Ayinde Wale and other officials, visited the agency to discuss complaints about bus shortages and long waiting times at stations across the state.
Addressing the delegation, Akinajo acknowledged the concerns raised, stating that LAMATA is working closely with the private sector to expand the number of operational buses.
She disclosed that the agency expects the delivery of approximately 500 Compressed Natural Gas buses and 50 electric vehicles by the last quarter of the year to help ease transportation challenges.
“She also informed the delegation that studies indicate Lagos requires around 15,000 buses to function optimally, while the current operational fleet is a little over 1,000,” the statement read.
The PCC delegation expressed appreciation for the agency’s efforts and commended Akinajo for providing detailed insights into LAMATA’s plans to improve the state’s transport system.
