Shehu Muazu claimed the title of the first Nigerian to finish the 2024 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon race, earning a cash prize of N1 million.
Bernard Sang, a Kenyan runner, claimed victory in the 2024 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon by clocking a time of 02:16:49, securing the top spot in the 42km race and the $50,000 prize money.
The 32-year-old bested approximately 80 competitors in the 9th edition of the event held on Saturday.
The dominance of East African athletes was evident as two other Kenyans, Simon Cheprot and Edwin Kiptoo, secured second and third place, earning cash prizes of $40,000 and $30,000 respectively. Kenyan runners have previously won the marathon in 2016, 2017, 2020, and 2021.
Additionally, 25-year-old Ethiopian runner Kebene Chala emerged as the first woman to cross the finish line.
The marathon, covering a distance of 42km, commenced at the National Stadium in Surulere and concluded at the Eko Atlantic City in Victoria Island.
The Lagos State Government, represented by the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, issued a traffic advisory ahead of the annual Access Bank Lagos City Marathon.
