Lagos man stabs friend to death over food bill

A tragic incident unfolded in the Ifako Ijaiye Local Government Area of Lagos State, where a dispute over payment for a meal turned fatal.

John, a man known simply by his first name, lost his life after his friend, Akinola Adeleye, allegedly stabbed him to death during an argument over who should settle the bill for a plate of food.

According to eyewitnesses, the altercation occurred approximately two weeks ago on Idiagbon Street, which is adjacent to the local government headquarters. John had been residing in Akinola’s house when the dispute over the food payment erupted.

The dispute began when Akinola ate a meal at a local eatery and, instead of paying immediately, requested that the bill be added to the account of his absent friend, John.

When John later visited the same restaurant to eat, he was informed that he owed for the meal his friend had consumed. This revelation left John surprised and angry, as he had not been informed about the arrangement.

Ugochukwu, a resident in the area, recounted the sequence of events, stating, “As they were fighting over the matter, Akinola, out of anger, asked John to pack out of his house immediately but John refused, and the fight intensified.”

In the heat of the quarrel, Akinola reportedly left the scene, only to return with a knife. In a shocking turn of events, he allegedly stabbed John, who subsequently collapsed on the ground with blood pouring from his wounds. The commotion that followed left the entire area in a state of chaos and mourning.

Tragically, John passed away on the spot, and it was reported that he had defecated on himself before his demise, further adding to the distressing scene.

Amid the chaos, Akinola attempted to flee but was apprehended by some young men in the area. Law enforcement authorities were called to the scene, but due to concerns about the volatile nature of the area, the police declined to enter.

Instead, the residents took it upon themselves to transport John’s lifeless body on a wheelbarrow to a nearby junction, where they handed Akinola over to the police.

Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident and stated that the suspect had been taken into custody at the State Criminal Investigations Department. Hundeyin also disclosed that the case would be presented in court tomorrow.
