A man identified as Ope Adeniran has been arrested in Lagos for defecating in public along the Oba Akran Bridge in Ikeja, violating the state’s environmental laws.
Officers of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, known as LAGESC, caught him in the act on Wednesday, July 9, during their routine patrol. His arrest is part of the state’s push to enforce better hygiene and sanitation in public spaces.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the arrest and said Adeniran would be prosecuted according to existing laws.
“Adeniran was arrested on Wednesday, July 9, contravening the laws of the state and will be prosecuted in accordance with the relevant environmental laws of Lagos State,” Wahab said.
The commissioner expressed frustration at the continued disregard for sanitation rules by some residents, adding that such actions go against efforts to keep the city clean and safe.
He warned that anyone caught violating these laws would face legal consequences and mentioned that the government might introduce stricter enforcement to stop such behaviour.
