The Executive Chairman of Kosofe Local Government Area, Moyo Ogunlewe, has raised the alarm over the unsafe and unsanitary placement of a food shop and hair salon inside toilet facilities at the Onabanjo Street market in Oworoshoki, Lagos.

Ogunlewe made the discovery during an unannounced inspection of the market, which also doubled as a supervision visit for ongoing road construction in the area.

In a video of the visit shared on his X page on Saturday, the council chairman was seen moving through the busy market, engaging traders and community members about the hygiene and public health risks posed by the arrangement.

“Na toilet be this now. No be toilet be this? Madam sorry o. You are sitting beside a toilet. You can’t do that now,” he said while pointing out the facility to those around him.

The footage showed exposed plumbing, PVC pipes, and unfinished concrete walls inside the structure where the businesses had been set up.

Speaking separately to an elder identified as the Baba Adini of a mosque, Ogunlewe said in Yoruba: “Baba, where people are making hair and selling food that people will eat, the place is a toilet. Is it good? Baba, if I serve you, you will pay 20 million. Wallahi.”

In a caption accompanying the video, Ogunlewe framed the issue with a direct question: “Why do you have a food shop and salon in a toilet in a local market?”

He described such unannounced visits to markets and construction sites as a key part of his approach to local governance, focused on practical, on-the-ground improvements.
