The Chairman of Otto-Awori Local Council Development Area in Lagos State, Prince Musbau Ashafa, has died, plunging the local chapter of the All Progressives Congress into mourning.

The traditional prince from the Ijanikin kingdom passed away on Friday following a prolonged, undisclosed illness.

He had reportedly been absent from public life for several months, during which his Chief of Staff and younger brother, Waliu Ashafa, had taken over most of the council’s operations.

Prince Ashafa was serving his second term as chairman at the time of his death. Prior to this role, he had served as the APC chairman in Otto-Awori LCDA. His entry into politics dates back to 1997 under the military regime of General Sani Abacha, when he was elected Chairman of the old Ojo Local Government during a zero-party election.

With a political career that spanned decades, Ashafa was a prominent figure in Ojo’s political landscape, rising through the ranks to play a pivotal role within the APC and ultimately securing the leadership of Otto-Awori LCDA.

His passing marks the fourth loss of an APC council chairman in Lagos within the past twelve months. Others who have died include Onigbongbo LCDA Chairman Oladotun Olakanle in November 2024, Ayobo-Ipaja LCDA Chairman Mrs. Bola Shobowale in March 2025 after a long illness, and former Ifako-Ijaiye LG Chairman Toba Oke in February 2025 following a terminal illness.

Mrs. Shobowale’s health had rendered her inactive for nearly a year before her eventual demise. The spate of losses has deeply affected the Lagos political scene, leaving gaps in leadership and drawing tributes from across the state.

As Otto-Awori grapples with the death of its leader, condolences have continued to pour in from political allies, traditional rulers, and community members who praised Ashafa’s enduring contributions and dedication to public service.

The local council has initiated transition procedures, while residents await further announcements concerning funeral plans and the appointment of a new chairman.

Prince Ashafa is remembered for his developmental efforts in Otto-Awori LCDA and his unwavering commitment to strengthening the APC’s influence in Lagos West.
