Lagos extends styrofoam ban enforcement by three weeks

Published

The Lagos State Government is standing firm on the ban on single-use plastics, specifically styrofoam products, with the enforcement set to commence in three weeks.

Commissioner of Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, emphasized the government’s commitment to permanently stopping the use of styrofoam on Thursday.

Wahab, after a meeting with stakeholders from the manufacturing and food service sector, expressed concerns about continued production despite the ban pronouncement over three years ago.

He highlighted the havoc caused by single-use plastics, particularly styrofoam, during and after the rainy season, stressing that the government is compelled to take action due to the producers’ failure to adhere to the law.

“The number of lives that have been lost through the effect of the use of styrofoam, the destruction of the ecosystem and aquatic lives, as well as the menace brought upon the environment, cannot be quantified,” Wahab stated.

The Lagos State government had initially announced the ban on January 21, citing the environmental impact of single-use plastics, especially non-biodegradable styrofoam.

Wahab reiterated the government’s decision, stating, “Following the menace which single-use plastics, especially non-biodegradable Styrofoam, are causing on the environment, the Lagos State government through the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources is hereby announcing a ban on the usage and distribution of Styrofoam and other single-use plastics in the State with immediate effect.’’

The government is providing a three-week moratorium for producers and distributors of styrofoam before the full enforcement of the ban.

Wahab urged responsible production practices to avoid environmental degradation and loss of lives.
