The Lagos State Government has commended the Nigeria Police Force, Zone 2 Command, for dismantling a child-trafficking syndicate and rescuing five children in the process.
Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, praised the police effort during a press briefing at the Command Headquarters in Onikan on Friday, describing the operation as a victory for child protection and law enforcement collaboration.
Speaking at the briefing, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zonal CID, Zone 2, Ajao Adewale, revealed that the criminal network had been operating with precision but was finally apprehended during their latest attempt.
The rescued children include, Marvelous Obi (1 year old), Promise Ifekwuna (3 years old), Somtochukwu Onyemaechi (1 year old), Chibuzornma Onyemaechi (3 years old), Praise Chukwu Ibezim (6 years old)
DCP Ajao explained that the syndicate was led by Sunday Okputu, who supplied the children, while Ibezim Chioma acted as a middle person and caregiver.
Another suspect, Chinasa Echelibe, was responsible for keeping the children before they were handed over to potential buyers.
Commissioner Ogunlende reiterated the Lagos State Government’s stance against child trafficking, warning those involved in the illegal trade to desist immediately.
“This event sends a strong message that the buying and selling of children in Lagos is illegal. They must cease this activity immediately,” he stated.
The rescued children have been handed over to the Ministry of Youth and Social Development for proper care and rehabilitation.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Toyin Oke-Osanyintolu, emphasized the importance of legal adoption and guardianship, urging Lagos residents to follow due process when seeking to care for children.
