Lagos govt cancels 50% transport fare discount
The Lagos State Government has announced that the 50% transport fare discount on all public transport systems will be cancelled, effective November 6, 2023.
The discount was introduced in August 2023 to cushion the effect of fuel price increases on residents.
However, the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority said in a statement on Saturday that the discount is no longer sustainable.
“The 50% rebate in transport fare in the regulated transport system in Lagos ends on Sunday,” LAMATA said on X.
“Starting from Monday, November 6, 2023, transport fare will return to the pre-2nd August 2023 rate.”
The cancellation of the discount is likely to come as a blow to many Lagos residents, who rely on public transportation to get around.
However, the state government has said that it is committed to providing affordable and accessible transportation for all.
