The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos Waste Management Authority has arrested over 25 individuals for illegal waste dumping in various parts of the state.

Among those apprehended were six vehicle owners caught disposing of large volumes of waste illegally.

The arrests were made following complaints from residents about indiscriminate refuse dumping, particularly around Abati Primary School on Shasha Road in Alimosho.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed the development on Saturday via a post on X.com, sharing videos of the enforcement action.

“In response to a complaint about illegal dumping activities at Abati Primary School, the Managing Director of LAWMA, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, mobilised the Waste Infractions Surveillance and Investigation Team to address and remediate the issue,” Wahab stated.

This latest crackdown follows a series of enforcement actions by LAWMA against environmental offenders. Last month, 50 individuals were arrested for improper waste disposal in the Iyana-Ipaja-Egbeda-Idimu axis.

The Lagos State Government has been ramping up efforts to tackle environmental violations, with Wahab revealing that more than 1,000 offenders were apprehended in the past year alone.

Authorities have continued to warn residents against indiscriminate waste disposal, emphasizing that offenders will face legal consequences.

LAWMA has also urged Lagosians to embrace proper waste management practices to keep the city clean and prevent flooding.
