A 27-year-old driver from Lagos, Aliyu Mohammed, has been arrested for stealing his boss’ Toyota Highlander and attempting to sell it in Minna, Niger State.

The vehicle, with registration number LSR102GU, was stolen after the driver took his boss to the airport.

Niger State Police Command spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the arrest on Monday, saying, “On 9/11/2024 at about 9:30 pm, following credible intelligence, police operatives from the Tactical Support Team of the Command tracked and arrested Aliyu Mohammed around the Tunga area in Minna with the stolen Toyota Highlander.”

During police questioning, Mohammed allegedly admitted that he worked as a driver in Lekki, Lagos, and had driven his boss to the airport before deciding to steal the vehicle. According to police, he then called his boss, claiming that he had been “robbed of the vehicle on the Third Mainland Bridge” in Lagos as a cover-up.

The police revealed that Mohammed had plans to sell the vehicle in Kaduna before returning to Lagos. He allegedly confessed that, although he had worked with his employer for over three years and earned N70,000 monthly, he needed more money to join a football academy in Abuja, which he claimed, motivated him to take the car.

SP Abiodun assured the public that the driver is now under investigation by the Tactical Support Team of the Niger State Police Command.
