The Lagos State Government has deployed pumping stations in several parts of Lagos Island to reduce flooding caused by blocked drainages and ongoing road construction.

The affected areas include Aroloya Street, Ojo-Giwa, Binuyo, and Oroyinyin.

This was announced on Thursday by the state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, through a post on his official X.com account.

“Following reports of the inconveniences being experienced by residents of Aroloya Street, Ojo-Giwa, Binuyo, Oroyinyin and other areas in Lagos Island, the Lagos State government has set up pumping stations in the area to pump out the stormwater and relieve residents and business owners,” Wahab said.

He explained that the flooding is only temporary and is happening because of major upgrades going on under the state’s urban renewal plan.

“It should be noted that the state government has approved a total regeneration of Lagos Island; to include improving and expanding the drainage infrastructures, constructing pumping stations with smart sensors for flood control, and reconstructing major roads to address tidal challenges,” he added.

Wahab also appealed to residents to be patient while the construction is going on.

“We plead with residents to bear with the government as the construction will be completed in a very short time. Stakeholders are expected to contribute by properly disposing of their waste in accordance with the guidelines set by #followlasg and by cooperating with the contractors,” he said.

The government said it is committed to easing the suffering of residents and business owners and is working hard to stop future flooding in the area.
