The Lagos State government has demolished shanties and evicted squatters around Adeniji-Adele on Lagos Island as part of its ongoing efforts to clear illegal structures and improve urban sanitation.

The Commissioner for the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, shared a video of the operation on Monday via X.com.

He wrote, “Operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps commenced operations, removing shanties on the setback of the drainage at Adeniji Adele.”

The video showed officials from the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps dismantling makeshift structures built on drainage setbacks and dislodging squatters from beneath the bridge in the area.

This operation follows similar clean-up efforts across Lagos State. Last Friday, the government demolished 138 shanties along the canal bank in Ajao Estate. Illegal occupants of these structures were reportedly paying rents of ₦60,000 to ₦100,000.

Last week, LAGESC also removed 54 illegal shanties under the Eko Bridge in Ebute-Ero. According to Ajayi Lukman, Head of Public Affairs and Advocacy Unit for LAGESC, the operation led to the evacuation of 84 illegal occupants and eight makeshift toilets from the area.
