Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Lagos State Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court in Ikeja has sentenced 61-year-old farmer, Abayomi Abraham, to 14 years in prison for attempting to sexually assault his 15-year-old biological daughter (name withheld).

The sentencing came after Abraham pleaded guilty to an amended one-count charge of attempted sexual assault by penetration.

He had initially been arraigned on February 21, 2024, facing four counts—defilement, sexual assault by penetration, attempted procurement of abortion, and indecent treatment of a child—to which he pleaded not guilty.

However, on Monday, the prosecution, led by Ms. Bukola Okeowo, informed the court that the defendant had entered into a plea bargain agreement. As a result, the charge was amended in line with Section 272 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

In his ruling, Justice Oshodi affirmed that the court was convinced Abraham fully understood the implications of his plea and had entered it voluntarily after receiving legal counsel.

“The convict was aware of the nature of the amended information and the consequences of his plea.
Abayomi Abraham, you have pleaded guilty to the offence of attempt to commit sexual assault by penetration contrary to Section 262 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State and I have accepted your plea and convicted you accordingly,” the judge declared.

Abraham was sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment, with the term to run from August 31, 2022, the date he was first remanded in custody.

Justice Oshodi also directed that Abraham’s name be added to the Lagos State Sex Offenders Register, in accordance with Sections 33 and 38 of the Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency Law of Lagos State, 2021.
