A video showing a man, Mr. Ayofe, attacking a female staff member at Rosebud Secondary School in the Idimu area of Lagos which has gone viral has sparked outrage with calls for investigation and justice.
The incident occurred when the parent, Mr. Ayofe came to pick up his child from the school and ended up physically assaulting a sanitation officer, Paul Agnes, and a teacher who tried to explain that his son was already downstairs.
According to an investigation by News Central, Mr. Ayofe became agitated and aggressive, demanding to see his son, and went on to physically assault the sanitation officer.
A teacher, Vivian Shonekan, narrated, “He bashed through the door and went straight upstairs, pushing the teacher on duty. We were all shocked by his actions, and the headmistress tried to separate the fight.”
Elizabeth Orgi, the teacher who recorded the viral video, described how Mr. Ayofe violently attacked the sanitation officer. “The sanitation officer was sweeping, and she calmly told him that his son was downstairs. But he suddenly pushed the tables and started beating her. I quickly recorded it, but he also came towards me and tried to hit me.”
The assaulted staff, Paul Agnes, explained her ordeal: “He started shouting and demanding to see his son, and when I stood up to tell him that his son was downstairs, he began hitting me and took my proof papers. The headmistress then came and separated us.”
News Central investigation also revealed that Mr Alofe’s wife is allegedly a police officer and went on to detain the teacher Elizabeth Orgi who shared that the experience was traumatizing for her.
“I wouldn’t have believed in my whole life that I would, in even a second, standing in
the police station, station, not even the cell now, in the station, not to talk of having
a night of sleep in the cell” Orgi stated.
Lagos State Police Spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that the police had seen the viral video but stated, “We have seen the video, but unless the victim files an official complaint, no investigation will commence.”
However, the Lagos State Government has since started an investigation into the matter. Mr. Kayode Sutton, the Head of Public Affairs for the Ministry of Education, said, “The Monitoring and Investigations Department of the Office of the Quality Assurance has stepped in, and we will apply appropriate legal action. The government will not tolerate any form of assault in our schools.”
This incident has caused shock among parents and staff of the school, with many calling for justice for the assaulted staff member.
