A National Youth Service Corps member in Lagos, Rita Uguamaye, also known as Raye, has claimed she was denied her NYSC certificate after completing her one-year service.
Raye, who went viral earlier this year for criticising President Bola Tinubu’s administration and describing Lagos as a “smelling state,” said on her social media page that NYSC officials told her she did not clear herself for April.
She alleged that the real reason was linked to her viral videos on TikTok, where she lamented Nigeria’s worsening economy, called the President a “terrible leader,” and accused Lagos of having “poor living conditions.”
“I was contemplating if I should share this or not, but just decided to,” she wrote. “After 1 year of moving to another man’s land to serve my country, ended with no certificate and telling me to come for final verdict that we already know how it’ll end. I genuinely wish I wasn’t a Lagos state corper because it’s a waste of my time.”
She claimed that when she went for her April clearance, the Local Government Inspector refused to attend to her, seized her file, and told her to leave. “The deep rooted anger I feel and hatred is crazy because I don’t know who to direct it to,” she added.
After her criticism went viral, Raye said NYSC officials warned her to delete her videos or face repercussions. She also claimed she was threatened, although NYSC has denied extending her service year as punishment for her comments.
Her case drew public attention, with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and human rights activist Omoyele Sowore condemning the alleged threats.
