Residents of Akinola and Aboru Estate in Lagos State have voiced their opposition to the new “Band A” electricity tariff, which they say imposes an unfair financial burden.
In a protest held on Wednesday, the residents took to the streets to denounce the high electricity rates, demanding immediate changes.
In a video shared by The Cable, the protesters were heard chanting, “We don’t want Band A, Band A is a scam.”
Carrying banners that outlined their demands, the protesters called for a reduction in electricity tariffs and improvements in service delivery by Ikeja Electric. One banner read:
– “We reject Band A outrageous tariff (N227/kWh). Move us to Band B now.”
– “Ikeja Electric must issue prepaid meters to all residents free of charge.”
– “Ikeja Electric must upgrade its electricity infrastructure for better service delivery.”
– “Supply stable and affordable electricity to all.”
The protest follows the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s announcement in April that subsidy removal would affect areas under “Band A” feeders, amounting to N140.7 billion. This resulted in a tariff increase to N209/kWh in July, further frustrating residents.
The community is now demanding a review of the pricing structure, insisting that they be moved to “Band B” for more affordable electricity tariffs.
