The Lagos State Government has ordered the immediate closure of the Ladipo spare parts market in Mushin due to several environmental offences, including reckless waste disposal, unclean premises, and non-payment of waste bills.

This decision was announced by Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab.

According to Wahab, the closure will persist until traders and market stakeholders meet the mandatory conditions for rectifying these offences.

He emphasized the importance of environmental hygiene in markets. He stated, “It is imperative that markets in the state adhere strictly to environmental laws and regulations put in place for the well-being of residents.”

Furthermore, he stressed that this action serves as a reminder that no entity, regardless of its size or influence, is above the law.

The State Government is determined to collaborate with market stakeholders to bring about necessary improvements and compliance with environmental standards.

The Lagos Waste Maintenance Agency will also intervene to ensure compliance among traders.

Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, explained that the closure allows for a thorough assessment of the environmental impact of traders’ activities in the market.

He emphasized that the state government will not hesitate to take decisive actions when environmental laws are flouted.

This decision follows similar actions taken against Oyingbo, Alayabiagba, Oke-odo markets, and some sections of Tejuosho Market, as part of the government’s commitment to restoring environmental sanity in the state.
