A Lagos High Court sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square has sentenced Bus Rapid Transit driver Andrew Ominikoron to death by hanging for the murder of 22-year-old fashion designer, Bamise Ayanwola.

Justice Serifat Sonaike delivered the judgment on Wednesday after more than two hours of proceedings. She ruled that the Lagos State Government had successfully proved beyond reasonable doubt that Ominikoron was guilty of the charges against him.

The judge said, “For the death of Oluwabamise Ayanwola, you will be hanged by the neck until you are dead. May God have mercy upon you.”

Bamise went missing in February 2022 after boarding a BRT bus operated by Ominikoron at the Chevron Bus Stop in Lekki. Her body was later found on Carter Bridge, Lagos Island, with signs of violence, sparking public outrage and calls for justice.

The case attracted wide attention and led to safety reviews of the Lagos BRT system.
