Pandemonium erupted on Ikorodu Road on Friday when one of the fleet of of Lagos State-owned Bus Rapid Transit went up in flames.
The incident took place at the Agric end of Ikorodu BRT terminal.
A trending video shared online showed commuters and motorists scampering for cover while a handful of persons were seen cursing and rejoicing over the incident.
Although the cause of the fire was not known as of the time of filing this report, Daily Trust reports that the fire incident was not a case of arson as being speculated.
Reliable sources also confirmed that there was no premeditated attack on the bus when it went up in flames, adding that it could probably be as a result of technical fault.
The development is coming at a point when tempers were still flaring over the alleged murder of Oluwabamise Ayanwola, a 22-year-old BRT passenger.
WuzupNigeria reported that Bamise went missing after boarding a Lagos Bus Rapid Transit with number plate 240257 from Chevron bus stop at Lekki to Oshodi, at about 7p.m. on February 26, 2022 and was found dead on Carter Bridge in Lagos Island the next day.
Two days later, the fleeing driver of the bus, Andrew Nice Omoninikoro, was arrested at his hideout in Ososa, Ogun State by the Department of State Services.
Nice, who claimed his BRT bus was hijacked by some unknown assailants, was apprehended along with the man that harboured him.
Earlier today (Friday), Omoninikoro, the arrested Lagos BRT driver was brought to a Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Yaba, where he was ordered to be remanded in police custody for 30 days.
