The police have brought charges against Olamilekan Adio, a 33-year-old businessman, at the Ojo Magistrate’s Court in Lagos on Wednesday.
The accusations include acquiring money under false pretence, theft, and causing a breach of peace.
The accused, whose place of residence was not disclosed, appeared before Magistrate L K. J. Layeni on three counts of fraudulent representation, theft, and disturbing public order. The alleged crime took place in October 2022.
Prosecutor Dr. Simon Uche revealed that Adio is accused of stealing N1.19 million from Mrs. Obi Oluchi. The defendant allegedly promised to use the money to buy products and rent a shop but failed to fulfill his commitment.
Dr. Uche informed the court that after taking the money, Adio absconded and did not repay as promised.
The prosecutor also highlighted that the accused, upon apprehension by the police, attempted to resist arrest and behaved in a manner likely to disrupt public order.
The charges brought against Adio are in violation of sections 168, 287, and 314 of the Lagos State Criminal Law, 2015.
During the court proceedings, Adio pleaded not guilty to the accusations. In response, the magistrate granted bail to the accused in the sum of N500,000. The bail conditions include providing two sureties in the same amount.
The case is adjourned to December 13 for mention.
