The Lagos State House of Assembly has issued a resolute call for the National Assembly to swiftly embark on a constitutional amendment enabling the establishment of state police. This decision comes as a response to the escalating threats of kidnapping and insecurity pervading Nigeria.

During a plenary session chaired by Speaker Mr. Mudashiru Obasa on Monday, lawmakers emphasized the pressing need for equipping the Neighbourhood Safety Corps to bolster support for other security agencies in Lagos State.

In an address under ‘Matter of Urgent Public Importance’, Speaker Obasa expressed deep concern over the pervasive insecurity gripping the nation.

He pointed to a recent kidnapping incident in the Ikorodu area of Lagos as evidence of the urgent need for enhanced security measures.

Asserting the urgency of action, Obasa emphasized the pivotal role of the National Assembly in spearheading a constitutional amendment to facilitate the establishment of state police.

He stressed that delaying action until the end of their tenure would be counterproductive and advocated for proactive steps to address the nation’s security challenges.

Obasa assuaged fears of potential abuse of power by state governors, underscoring the importance of incorporating safeguards within the law to prevent such occurrences.

Moreover, the speaker advocated for allocating a specific percentage from the Security Trust Fund to bolster the capacity of the security corps in Lagos State. He highlighted the significance of addressing the root causes of insecurity through robust youth engagement initiatives, including sports, to divert young people from criminal activities.

During the discussion, Mr. Aro Moshood shared a firsthand account of a recent kidnapping incident in Igbogbo Bayeku, Ijede Local Council Development Area, emphasizing the need for enhanced security surveillance.

Mr. Ajayi Oladele stressed the importance of proactive government measures, particularly in managing the influx of people into Lagos without adequate accommodation plans.

The resolution underscores the assembly’s commitment to addressing the security challenges facing Lagos State. It underscores the critical role of legislative action in promoting public safety and security.

“We must consider factors that lead to insecurity. Poverty: in this period of rising inflation, we can continue bringing relief to our people. Sports have been a very effective tool to take our youth away from crime,” added Speaker Obasa.
