The Lagos State House of Assembly has announced new security measures ahead of its plenary session on Monday.
All staff members and legislative aides will be required to present valid identity cards to access the Assembly premises, a move to tighten security following the ongoing controversy surrounding the impeachment of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.
A notice signed by Omotayo Adekemi on behalf of Acting Clerk Taiwo Ottun informed staff that no one will be allowed entry without proper identification. T
he notice also mentioned that the Lagos State Police Command has pledged to maintain order at the Assembly complex, regardless of the situation.
This security step comes after the impeachment of Obasa on January 13, 2025, over allegations of misconduct and financial mismanagement. Obasa was replaced by the Deputy Speaker, Mojisola Meranda. The former speaker has since broken his silence, insisting that he remains the legitimate speaker until the proper legal process is followed.
Monday’s plenary will be the third session under Meranda’s leadership. Obasa was absent from the last two sittings, and his supporters have continued to challenge the impeachment.
Despite the tense situation, the Assembly appears calm as it prepares to resume its activities.
