The Lagos State House of Assembly has initiated a thorough evaluation of roads across the state to assess their current conditions and identify areas requiring urgent attention.
This proactive measure comes in response to growing concerns raised by lawmakers regarding the deteriorating state of several roads within Lagos.
The Committee on Works and Infrastructure, spearheaded by Hon. Desmond Elliot, has received the full backing of Speaker Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa to embark on this comprehensive assessment.
The committee’s objective is to gain a clear understanding of the challenges faced by Lagosians due to poor road conditions and formulate recommendations to improve the situation.
“The Speaker and the House are deeply concerned about the state of our roads, particularly the recurring issue of newly constructed roads being washed away within a short period,” expressed Hon. Elliot.
“This road assessment aims to identify strategies for extending the lifespan of our roads and mitigating the damage caused by heavy rainfall. We anticipate additional rainfall next year, and we are committed to ensuring that our roads are safe, accessible, and durable for the benefit of all.“
The committee’s efforts extend beyond state-level roads, as they have engaged in discussions with the Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Works to address the maintenance of federal roads within Lagos.
Hon. Elliot emphasized the committee’s unwavering determination to ensure that all roads within the state, regardless of their governing body, receive the necessary attention and repair.
“Our meeting with our counterparts at the National Assembly was fruitful, and we are optimistic about the outcomes. We will not rest until all roads in Lagos, whether federal, state, or local government, are brought up to par. The Lagos Assembly, under the leadership of Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, remains steadfast in its commitment to making Lagos roads second to none,” asserted Hon. Elliot.
Echoing this sentiment, Hon. Femi Saheed, a member of the committee, emphasized the importance of fostering a collaborative approach among all levels of government to address the issue of road infrastructure.
“We strive to establish a holistic and symbiotic relationship among the federal, state, and local governments to ensure that road maintenance responsibilities are effectively shared and executed,” stated Hon. Saheed.
In response to the committee’s findings, Adekunle Olayinka, Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Works and Infrastructure, assured the committee that the ministry would prioritize addressing the areas where concerns were raised.
He commended the Lagos Assembly for its proactive approach and reiterated the government’s commitment to addressing road infrastructure challenges in the state.
