Lagos announces traffic diversion for Marine bridge repairs

The Lagos State Government has announced a traffic diversion on the Marine Bridge to allow emergency maintenance work.

The repairs will start on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, and are expected to end on Tuesday, February 25, 2025.

Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the Commissioner for Transportation, explained in a statement on Sunday that the diversion is needed for the Federal Ministry of Works to fix sections of the bridge’s asphalt pavement.

Motorists have been urged to use alternative routes to ease traffic congestion during the period.

For vehicles heading from Apapa to Lagos Island, the suggested route is via the Costain Roundabout to Eko Bridge, leading to Lagos Island. Alternatively, motorists can take the Marine Bridge through Ijora 7up to connect to Ijora Causeway Access Road and proceed to Lagos Island.

For those travelling from Apapa to Ijora Causeway or Iddo, drivers can also use the Costain Roundabout to access Eko Bridge and connect to Ijora Causeway through the U-turn to reach Iddo. Another option is the Marine Bridge via Ijora 7up, linking to Ijora Causeway Access Road and heading to Iddo.

The government confirmed that traffic coming into Apapa from Costain Roundabout will not be affected.

Osiyemi appealed to motorists for understanding, saying, “Motorists are implored to exercise patience as this diversion forms part of the traffic management plans for the rehabilitation works on the asphalt pavement, being undertaken by the Federal Ministry of Works.”

The state government assured the public of regular updates to reduce disruptions caused by the repairs.

This traffic diversion is part of ongoing repair projects in Lagos this year. In September, a similar eight-week diversion was implemented for repairs on the Eko Bridge. That project involved phased closures to ensure completion within the timeline.
