The Lagos State Government will temporarily close sections of the Five Cowries Creek from Thursday, October 2 to Sunday, October 5, 2025, to host the E1 Championship, the world’s first all-electric powerboat race.

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) said the move is to ensure safety and smooth operations during the Lagos leg of the event, which makes the city the first in Africa to host the global competition.

According to LASWA, there will be a partial closure from Falomo Bridge to Oriental Hotel on October 2 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. A total closure from Oriental Hotel to Mekwen Bridge will follow on October 3 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. The creek will then experience a full closure from Falomo Bridge to Oriental Hotel on October 4 and 5, between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Normal ferry operations will resume on Monday, October 6. LASWA advised ferry operators and passengers to plan ahead and use alternative routes to avoid disruptions.

The agency added that the closures are part of efforts to showcase Lagos as a destination for international sporting events.

The E1 Championship combines sport and environmental innovation, promoting zero-emission transport on waterways. Lagos has also launched the €410 million Omi Eko project to expand electric-powered water transport by 2030, with support from international partners including the EU, AFD, and the European Investment Bank.
