Residents in Kwara State have voiced their dissatisfaction with the services provided by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, prompting the Kwara State House of Assembly to take action.
The Assembly has called on Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to direct the state Ministry of Energy to investigate the complaints against IBEDC and address the alleged extortionist practices of the company’s staff.
During a session held on Tuesday, the Assembly unanimously passed a resolution to initiate the investigation. This decision aims to give residents of Kwara State the opportunity to express their concerns and grievances while also allowing IBEDC’s management to provide clarifications regarding the complaints raised against the company.
Furthermore, the Assembly has urged IBEDC to prioritize the provision of reliable prepaid meters to electricity consumers in Kwara State and to cease the practice of estimated billing without delay.
Ganiyu Folabi Salau, who led the debate on the matter, expressed worry over the persistent issues faced by residents, including the lack of proper metering systems and questionable practices by IBEDC staff. Despite the silence of residents on these issues, the recent increase in power outages has highlighted the need for immediate action to ensure that consumers receive the services they pay for.
In response to these concerns, the Assembly has tasked its energy committee with engaging IBEDC’s management to address the arbitrary billing system and other related matters to improve service delivery in the state.
