The Federal University Lokoja in Kogi State is in mourning after a tragic accident claimed the lives of five students.
A heavy-duty trailer, loaded with palm oil and firewood and heading to Abuja, crashed into a shuttle carrying the students at Felele, Lokoja, on Monday.
The university’s Deputy Registrar of Human Resources, Vincent Ojo, confirmed the incident in a statement, describing it as a painful loss.
“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the tragic loss of five of our promising students, who were taken away from us too soon in a fatal trailer accident,” he said.
Ojo added that the accident had left the university community in deep sorrow.
As a mark of respect, the school declared lecture-free days from 12 noon on Tuesday, February 18, and all day Wednesday, February 19, 2025.
“All university activities will be on a low-key while the institution’s flag will fly at half-mast as a symbol of mourning,” Ojo stated.
The university management expressed condolences to the families and friends of the victims, promising support during this difficult time.
In response to the tragedy, Kogi State Deputy Governor Salifu Joel Oyibo visited the university to commiserate with students and staff.
He assured the school that urgent steps would be taken to prevent further accidents along the Felele axis.
“Urgent measures are being taken to address the incessant ugly trend along the Felele axis comprehensively,” a post on the university’s social media page stated.
