The Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission has fixed October 17, 2026, for the conduct of local government elections across the state.

The chairman of the commission, Nderi Mamman, made this known on Wednesday during a stakeholders’ meeting in Lokoja.

He said the elections would cover chairmanship and councillorship positions across the 21 local government areas and 239 wards in the state.

Mamman explained that the notice of election was issued in line with Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, which requires publication of election notices not later than 360 days before the poll date.

He added that the detailed timetable, including dates for party primaries, submission of candidate lists, and campaign periods, would be released on October 24.

Only political parties recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission will be eligible to sponsor candidates, he said, urging all stakeholders to follow the Electoral Act and KOSIEC guidelines to ensure a credible process.

Stakeholders at the meeting commended the commission for announcing the date early and called for stronger voter education and enlightenment efforts.
