Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo, has expressed deep sorrow over a tragic boat accident that left many dead while transporting passengers from Kupa Ebe to Katcha Market.

The accident occurred near Kpata Danbo, and 24 passengers have been rescued so far, according to a statement from the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, on Saturday. The rescued victims are currently receiving medical attention in nearby health facilities.

“Sadly, many more are feared dead,” Fanwo said, adding that rescue operations are ongoing.

The governor extended condolences to the families affected by the tragedy. “Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. We remain committed to supporting rescue efforts and are working closely with state and federal agencies to minimize the loss of life,” the statement read.

Ododo has directed the State Emergency Management Agency to provide immediate relief materials to the victims’ families and instructed the Ministry of Health to ensure survivors receive proper care.

Fanwo also commended the swift response from the National Inland Waterways Authority, River Marshals, and officials from Katcha Local Government Area in Niger State, who worked alongside Kogi and federal agencies to address the situation.

The governor called for stricter safety measures for marine transportation, urging operators to avoid night travel and adopt safety protocols.

“The government is committed to implementing legal and administrative frameworks to safeguard the lives of both operators and passengers using water transportation,” Fanwo added.

Ododo urged all agencies involved in rescue operations to intensify efforts to save more lives.

“May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may their families find the strength to bear this loss,” he said.

Rescue operations and investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing.
