Liverpool’s manager, Jurgen Klopp, has revealed his intention to step down from his managerial position at the conclusion of the ongoing season, attributing his decision to a diminishing reserve of energy.
Klopp, who assumed the managerial reins in October 2015 with a contract slated to extend until 2026, reminisces about his illustrious journey at Liverpool, punctuated by triumphs such as the 2019 Champions League victory and the momentous Premier League title win in 2019-20.
Klopp’s decision to depart comes amidst Liverpool’s commanding position atop the Premier League standings.
In his statement, Klopp unveils, “I told the club already in November,” shedding light on the deliberation behind his decision, “I can understand that it’s a shock for a lot of people in this moment, when you hear it for the first time, but obviously I can explain it – or at least try to explain it.”
Expressing his deep affection for the club, its city, supporters, team, and staff, Klopp underscores the emotional complexity of his decision, despite his unwavering love for Liverpool. He articulates, “But that I still take this decision shows you that I am convinced it is the one I have to take.”
The 56-year-old manager elucidates, “It is that I am, how can I say it, running out of energy. I have no problem now, obviously, I knew it already for longer that I will have to announce it at one point, but I am absolutely fine now. I know that I cannot do the job again and again and again and again.”
Klopp’s tenure at Liverpool has been nothing short of monumental, marked by significant achievements including Liverpool’s sixth European Cup triumph in 2019 and subsequent victories in the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup, culminating in the Premier League title in the subsequent season.
Reflecting on the challenges and successes of his tenure, Klopp candidly shares, “For me it was super, super, super important that I can help to bring this team back on to the rails. It was all I was thinking about.”
As Klopp prepares to depart, his assistant managers Pepijn Lijnders and Peter Krawietz, alongside elite development coach Vitor Matos, will also bid farewell to the club, marking the end of an era at Liverpool Football Club.
