An abducted medical doctor in Edo State, Dr. Ibrahim Tahir, has regained his freedom after his family paid a ransom of N50 million to his kidnappers.

Tahir was kidnapped alongside his younger brother on January 2, 2026, at their residence on City Pride Road, Igbira Camp, Auchi. Tragically, his brother’s body was found three days later near Orley River, reportedly killed by the abductors.

The victims’ father confirmed in a telephone conversation with The PUNCH on Thursday that the ransom was paid in two tranches of N20 million and N30 million before his son was released around 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

He explained that the money was raised through combined efforts of the family, donations from NGOs, friends, and other well-wishers. He also disclosed that Dr. Tahir sustained a bullet graze to his leg during the ordeal and is currently receiving treatment in a hospital.

The father added that during the process leading to the release, vigilantes and hunters ambushed the kidnappers, leaving one of them with gunshot injuries.

The Police Public Relations Officer for the Edo State Command, ASP Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the victim’s release on Thursday, stating, “I can confirm to you that the doctor has been released.”
