The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has announced plans to establish a team of special marshals to carry out periodic, unannounced visits to airports across Nigeria.

The aim is to ensure better professionalism among airport workers and improved hygiene standards.

This was disclosed in a statement by Tunde Moshood, Keyamo’s Special Adviser on Media and Communications, on Thursday.

According to Moshood, the marshals will be made up of representatives from the media, state governors, non-governmental organisations, and other stakeholders.

The statement explained, “These key measures are designed to improve service delivery and environmental standards at these facilities. One of the initiatives is the appointment of voluntary Special Airport Marshals.”

Moshood further noted that the marshals would provide independent assessments of airport conditions and staff conduct, reporting directly to the minister. “With this initiative, the Honourable Minister will no longer rely solely on official reports from airport managers but will also incorporate independent observations from the voluntary Special Airport Marshals,” he said.

The marshals’ reports will guide the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) in addressing issues promptly.

Keyamo and senior officials, including federal lawmakers overseeing aviation, will also conduct surprise inspections. These visits will allow the minister to personally monitor workers’ performance, engage with staff, and emphasize the importance of professionalism.
“During these visits, the Honourable Minister will personally participate in various operational activities, demonstrating leadership and encouraging workers to maintain courteous and professional service,” Moshood added.
