The Katsina government has announced plans to introduce a special allowance package for teachers assigned to rural areas.

The disclosure was made by the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Zainab Musa-Musawa, during a one-day summit held in Katsina on Tuesday.

The event was organised in partnership with Save the Children International and GoalPrime Nigeria, with funding from Education Cannot Wait.

The commissioner explained that the allowance would provide teachers with a percentage of their salary as compensation. Ms. Musa-Musawa said the incentive aims to encourage educators to accept postings in rural locations, particularly those facing minor security challenges.

She expressed concern that many teachers tend to prefer urban postings, resulting in a shortage of educators in rural communities.

Ms. Musa-Musawa added that the ministry is actively working to address this issue and believes the introduction of the allowance will help improve the situation.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the summit was held to mark the International Day to Protect Education from Attack.
