Nigerian football legends Nwankwo Kanu, Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha, and Daniel Amokachi will feature in a special African Legends United gala match in Abuja later this month.

Kanu confirmed the event on Thursday, stating that former teammates Finidi George and other African greats will also participate. The match is scheduled for March 28 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

The game is part of the African Continental Free Trade Area Festival, which runs from March 26 to 28. Kanu said the goal is to promote African culture and empower grassroots communities.

“It’s happening in Nigeria and the legends are going to be there. They are going to do what we normally know how to do… We involve in this project because we want to promote the culture of Africa. At the same time, empower the grassroots,” Kanu explained.

He added that the legends agreed to take part to inspire young Africans and encourage unity across the continent.

Former Cameroon international Eyong Enoh, who is also involved, said the festival aims to strengthen continental unity. “The only difference between Cameroon and Nigeria is a line that was drawn colonially. I don’t see myself just as a Cameroonian. I see myself as an African,” Enoh stated.

He described the event as an initiative to shift “from the lines that divide to the lines that unite.”

The AfCFTA Festival will also include startup exhibitions and cultural showcases alongside the football match.
