The management of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria has ordered the immediate closure of two female students’ hostels in Kano over what it described as immoral behaviour and security concerns.
The affected hostels — Al-Ansar Indabo, located at UDB Road and Hotoro in Kano metropolis — were reportedly found to be operating against the university’s rules.
Dr. Hamza Garba, the university’s Vice President of Campus Life, made this known in a statement on Monday. He said the hostels had been withdrawn from the list of school-approved accommodations due to repeated violations of the school’s code of conduct.
“I am directed by the management to write, inform, and bring to the attention of our esteemed parents and students that the university has withdrawn its approval for Al-Ansar Indabo female students hostels,” the statement read.
Garba added that the university took the step to protect students and provide a morally upright living environment.
According to him, the hostels were involved in various acts of misconduct including immoral behaviour, violence among students, poor water and power supply, sharing of space with unknown persons, and students moving out at night without permission.
“These issues pose a serious threat to the well-being of our students,” he stated.
The university directed all affected students to vacate the hostels immediately after the ongoing semester examinations and warned them not to return to the hostels.
MAAUN also said it was working with security agencies to make sure the directive is followed and warned that it will not be held responsible for anything that happens to students who refuse to comply.
Parents and students were advised to contact the Vice President, Campus Life, through the official email — [vp-campuslife@maaun.edu.ng](mailto:vp-campuslife@maaun.edu.ng) — for help in finding safe and approved hostel options.
