Kano State’s Joint Security Taskforce Committee has intensified its crackdown on criminal activities, arresting 28 suspected thugs and recovering a cache of dangerous weapons and illicit substances.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Public Relations Officer of the committee, who also serves as the state Commissioner of Information, Ibrahim Waiya, confirmed the arrests.

“Between March 3rd and 13th, 2025, joint security operations conducted by the Kano State Government Task Force Committee on Peace Restoration and Youth Rehabilitation resulted in the arrest of 28 suspected thugs (Yan Daba) and the recovery of dangerous weapons and illicit drugs,” the statement read.

According to the statement, intelligence reports had alerted security agencies to plans for violent activities during the holy month of Ramadan.

This prompted a series of operations in strategic locations across Kano metropolis, leading to the arrests and confiscation of weapons and illegal substances.

“The Joint Security Operations of Kano State Task Force Committee, comprising the Police, DSS, NDLEA, NSCDC, Correctional Services, and Vigilante, arrested 28 suspected thugs and recovered some exhibits in Kano metropolis,” Waiya added.

Among the recovered items were 283 parcels and 14 wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Cannabis Sativa, a cutlass, three scissors, a pointed iron, two bottles of “suck and die,” 13 packets of knockouts, and one rubber solution.

The suspects have since been charged to Chief Magistrate Court Number 12, Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, for prosecution.

In a move to curb further disturbances, the Task Force Committee reiterated the Kano State Government’s ban on “Tashe,” a traditional performance often linked to public disorder.

“The use of knockouts or bangers is prohibited, and violators will be dealt with according to the law,” the statement warned.

Chairman of the committee, Yusuf Kofarmata, commended the security personnel involved in the operation and urged residents to support law enforcement efforts to maintain peace and security in the state.
