The Kano State Independent Electoral Commission has officially announced November 30, 2024, as the date for the upcoming local government elections.
This significant development comes in the wake of a recent Supreme Court judgment granting financial autonomy to local governments.
KANSIEC Chairman Sani Malumfashi unveiled the electoral timeline during a press conference in Kano on Wednesday.
The process will kick off with the issuance of election notification on November 15, followed by the availability of nomination forms from October 1 to October 11. Candidates are required to submit their forms by October 18, 2024.
The Commission has scheduled the screening of candidates from October 18 to October 20, with the list of eligible candidates to be released on October 24. Malumfashi stated, “We plan to release the results of the winners by December 10, 2024,” emphasizing that the entire process will be conducted in strict compliance with the Electoral Act and Kano Local Government Law.
In preparation for the elections, KANSIEC has issued strict guidelines for campaign materials. Candidates are prohibited from placing posters on places of worship, schools, and government buildings, with Malumfashi warning of punitive measures for any violations.
The Commission expects all 19 political parties in the state to participate in the elections. Recognizing the potential security challenges in a state with 44 local governments and over 7 million voters, Malumfashi assured that KANSIEC will work closely with security agencies to ensure a peaceful process.
To manage the electoral operations, the Commission plans to recruit approximately 13,000 ad-hoc staff who will oversee activities at the 11,000 polling units across Kano State.
