Kano orders removal of mentally challenged persons from streets

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has issued a directive for the evacuation of individuals with mental health disorders who roam the streets of the metropolis and surrounding areas.

The governor has mandated that they be relocated to psychiatric hospitals for proper treatment.

Fauziyya D. Sulaiman, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Vulnerable and Needy, confirmed this development to newsmen, citing numerous complaints received about individuals with mental health challenges wandering the streets, some of whom were reportedly seen in a state of nudity.

In her statement, Sulaiman explained, “Several complaints have been received by the Governor over the persons living with mental health disorder who are roaming the streets in the metropolis and environs. Some of them go about naked and, in the process, some of them were molested, especially the female.”

She further clarified, “The Governor, however, ordered that they all be evacuated from the streets to psychiatric hospitals for proper medical treatment.”
