Two sisters, Rebecca Simon and Tina Simon, appeared before a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, accused of beating up a shop owner over N300 change.

The sisters, aged 24 and 28, are residents of Ungwan Yelwa Television area in Kaduna, and both pleaded not guilty to the charge of causing grievous hurt.

According to the prosecution counsel, Inspector Chidi Leo, the incident happened on October 7, when the sisters went to Felicia Samson’s shop to buy a loaf of bread for N1,200. They paid with N1,500, but the shop owner did not have N300 change and asked them to help her find some.

An argument started, and the prosecutor said the defendants attacked the shop owner, beating her and causing serious injuries. “The complainant was saved by neighbors who rushed her to Sabon Tasha General Hospital for treatment,” Leo explained.

The offence, under Section 224 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State 2017, carries a seven-year jail term if the accused are found guilty.

Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel granted the sisters bail, setting it at N100,000 each, with one surety each. He also ruled that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction. The case was adjourned to November 7 for hearing.
