Kaduna shuts school where teachers beat student to death

The Kaduna State government has shut down Al-Azhar Academy, a school in Zaria, where a student was allegedly killed by some teachers for skipping classes.

The student, Marwan Sambo, 19, was in JSS 3 and died after suffering severe injuries from the teachers’ beatings and punishments.

The Kaduna State Schools Quality Assurance Authority said in a statement that it had joined the state’s Ministry of Education and the school to investigate the incident.

The statement, signed by the KSSQAA Director-General, Dr. Usman Abubakar, said they visited the school, the student’s home, the police station where the principal and vice-principal were detained, the hospital where the student was confirmed dead, and the graveyard where he was buried.

The fact-finding team then moved to Hajiya Gambo Sawaba General Hospital, Zaria, where the victim was formally confirmed dead.

“Finally, KSSQAA team visited the graveyard where the victim was“said to had been put to rest, and a fresh-looking grave was observed

“In the interim, guided by the provisions of its Establishment Act (amended 2015), the KSSQAA has closed down Al-Azhar Academy, Zaria and the school premises“remains sealed pending the outcomes of the investigation,” he said

Abubakar said that Governor Uba Sani was committed to ensuring a safe and conducive learning environment for all students and that justice would be done in the case.

He also appealed to the public to remain calm and law abiding while the investigation was ongoing.
