The Kaduna State Independent Electoral Commission has announced the results of the 2024 Local Government Elections held on October 19, 2024.

The All Progressives Congress has been declared the winner of 23 chairmanship positions and 255 councillorship seats across the state.

“We commend the people of Kaduna State, especially the voters who came out in their numbers to exercise their democratic franchise,” said Hajiya Mohammed, the Chairman of the Commission.

In her announcement, Hajiya Mohammed explained that eight political parties participated in the elections. She confirmed, “By the power vested in the Commission, I hereby wish to confirm the results earlier collected and returned by the returning officers. I am confirming these results as follows: APC won the 23 local government chairmanship positions and the 255 ward councillorship positions across the state.”

The APC secured wins in various local governments, including Birnin-Gwari, Chikun, Igabi, Ikara, Jaba, Jema’a, Kachia, Kaduna North, and Kaduna South. Other local governments won by the APC include Kagarko, Kajuru, Kaura, Kauru, Kubau, Kudan, Lere, Makarfi, Sabon Gari, Sanga, Soba, Zango-Kataf, and Zaria.

The breakdown of the councillorship positions shows that the ruling party cleared all 255 councillorship positions. For example, they won 11 wards in Birnin Gwari, 12 in Chikun, and 12 in Kaduna North.

“The peaceful and orderly conduct of the election is a credit to the voters and the people of Kaduna State,” Hajiya Mohammed emphasized. She added, “It shows that democracy is alive. We will continue to build on the successes recorded towards democratic consolidation.”

Hajiya Mohammed also praised the work of the Commission’s staff, saying, “I commend our Commissioners, the Secretary to the Commission, Directors of the Commission, Electoral Officers, their assistants, and other staff of the Commission who have worked tirelessly to ensure the success of this exercise. We commend their professionalism and unwavering commitment to the success of the elections.”

Governor Uba Sani, who cast his vote at the LEA Kawo polling unit O47, expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the elections. He noted that the elections had been generally free, fair, and peaceful, with only minor issues reported in three polling units.

He stated, “The turnout across the 23 local government areas was satisfactory,” and highlighted the extensive campaigning by the APC throughout the state. The governor urged voters to remain peaceful, reminding them, “In every election, there are winners and losers.” He expressed confidence that the process would result in credible outcomes.
