The Kaduna State Independent Electoral Commission has presented a timetable for the screening exercise for councillors and chairmanship candidates ahead of the local government election slated for October 19, 2024.
According to the PUNCH, the timetable was signed by the Chairman of the Commission, Mrs Hajara Mohammed, and issued in Kaduna on Friday.
The document showed that the screening exercise for all the chairmanship and councillorship candidates has been scheduled to be held from Monday, September 9, to Monday, September 16, from 9 a.m. to 6 a.m. daily at the respective local government headquarters.
“I wish to refer to Section 19 of the Kaduna State Independent Electoral Commission Law 2024, item No. 9 of the 2024 Local Government Council Election Time Table and P.9 item No. 3 of the Guidelines.
Based on the above, you are by the notice informed that the screening exercise for the prospective chairmanship and councillorship candidates is scheduled to be held from Monday, Sept. 9 to Monday, Sept. 16, 2024, from 9 am to 6 am daily,” the timetable said.
President Bola Tinubu lauded the Supreme Court’s judgment affirming the constitutional rights of local governments in July, emphasising its critical role in advancing effective governance at the grassroots level.
He emphasized that local council leaders now have the responsibility to deliver people-oriented services and ensure that Nigerians at the grassroots feel the impact of governance.
